The fundamental problems of finance relate to information, risk and the blend of competition and cooperation among financial decision-makers. Finance uses the methods of economics, mathematics and statistics to construct and test both theoretical and applied models of optimal portfolio selection, optimal financial decisions of firms, the organization and efficiency of financial markets and institutions and their implications for social welfare.
