Using the Global Marketing Information Database

Market analysis for global industries or corporations can be found in the Global Marketing Information Database OR GMID.

To use GMID, access the database from the library homepage www.utdallas.edu/library and click “Accept” to enter the database.

In the updated GMID there are many categories to select from. Selections can be made from the left column or from the green tabs along the top of the screen. All categories are reflected in both places. Your selections are Industries, Countries,  Consumers, and Companies. Geographies is an extra selection in the green tabs.

Industries offers (Stephanie click on the green tab for Industries) an alphabetical list of predetermined standard industry classifications. Click on your choices to view in-depth analyses, reports and market trends.

Countries (Click on the green tab for countries) offers economic, political and consumer information. Click on any category here to be taken to the search interface.

Consumers (click on the green tab for consumers) offers consumer lifestyles and future demographics, country analysis and much more. Click on any topic in the left column to tailor a search.

Companies offers (click on the green tab for companies) analysis of companies that have been evaluated by GMID. Information about the global or national brand owner includes financials, statistics analysis and trends.

Geographies (click on the green tab for geographies) offers predetermined selections for global areas. Click on any geographic area to view industry,  country, economic or consumer information.

In GMID, you can tailor your searches as you did in the previous version by doing a “Menu Search”. Hover your mouse on the orange “Search” tab in the upper left corner. Select “Menu Search”.

Expand your Category area by clicking on the (+) plus sign. Each time you click on an item it is selected and appears on the right side of the search box. Click on the check box to deselect an item.

In this example we will search mobile telephones in North America. Click on the plus sign next to “IT and Telecommunications” this opens up to reveal more selections. Click the plus sign next to “Telecommunications.” Click on the check box next to“Cellular and Wireless Communications” to select and then click on the orange “Next” button in the lower screen.

Select the Geography in the same way. First click on the + (plus sign) next to North America because we want to look at just the USA. Click the check box for USA to select.

Click on “Run Search” to view the search results, which will show market and country profiles for mobile telephone users in the United States. Click on the report name to view individual reports.

Another way to use GMID is to let the database search for you. Click on the orange “Search” button at the top of the screen and select “Menu Search.” At the bottom of the search box, in the “Find Category” box type pet food and then click on the red “Go” button. Scroll down and click on each occurrence of the word pet food in the category list. Each will appear when selected in your right column. Click “Next” to select your geography. Choose North America. Click on “Run Search” to see the results. Scroll down towards the bottom to see the list of market reports, company analyses and recent industry commentary.

Click on the small magnifying glass at the top left of the screen to modify your search or begin a new search.

It is also possible to use the existing reports in GMID instead of searching. Click on “My Home” at the top left of the screen to return to the entry page. In the lower left of the screen click on “Latest Reports” under “Search Analysis” to see the list of available items. The list is alphabetical by consumer and industry category.

(STEPHANIE, DON”T CLICK ON IT DURING THE TUTORIAL.  IT STILL TAKES A TERRIBLY LONG TIME TO LOAD)

“Keyword search” is also very useful. Click on the orange search tab at the top of the screen and select Text Search. Type chocolate in the search box. There will be several pages of results so scroll down to view the available categories. At the bottom of a category click a page number or Next to navigate. There will be an extensive list of reports and statistics. Click the check boxes to select as many as you wish to view and then click “Review My Selections”, then ”build my selections”to see the reports.
