Accounting research is characterized by its reliance on rigorous analytical and empirical methods to address questions driven by problems and applications from the field. Doctoral training builds a strong foundation in the basic disciplines of economics, mathematics, psychology and statistics, and an appreciation of both theoretical and empirical research. The Accounting & Information Management faculty at UTD have been
trained at some of the leading universities in the world. Their
current research addresses cutting edge topics such as cost management
systems, financial and non-financial metrics for performance
evaluation, balanced scorecards for operating managers, activity-based
costing, strategic profitability analysis, financial information
systems, accounting and stock return based executive compensation
plans, accounting for stock options, managerial incentives to make
voluntary accounting disclosures, public accounting industry analysis,
optimal assignment to audit tasks and outsourcing of accounting
functions. Their research is published in major journals in accounting
such as The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics,
and Journal of Accounting Research, and in leading journals in related
areas of management sciences, information systems, economics, and
organization strategy. Accounting & Information Management faculty's
distinctive contributions have been recognized by numerous research,
teaching and scholastic awards. They have authored or supervised eight
award-winning dissertations.
