Information Systems - Life Blood of Successful Business

Information systems deal with creating value in organizations through information technology. Therefore, information systems encompass people, technology, and organizations. If you are fascinated by technology such as I-Phones, FaceBook, and Twitter, and are curious about the potential opportunities these technologies to improve people's lives, then you have what it takes to major in information systems and you are likely to be successful in this field. Many people think that IS professionals do only programming. However, programming is just a small part of many IS professionals, and there are many jobs in IS where you do not program. Our curriculum also reflects this reality; it has just one required programming course.

Information Systems Careers

A degree or a concentration in Information Systems (IS) from UTD will prepare the students for a career in a high-growth and dynamic profession. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (2008-2009) reports that 5 of the 12 fastest growing occupations relate to the IS field - "Employment of computer and information systems managers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2016.Read more Many managers possess advanced technical knowledge gained from working in a computer occupation. Job opportunities will be best for applicants with a strong understanding of business and good communication skills." The popular press is full of similar statements - see for example Money Magazine, TechRepublic, ComputerWorld, Career Voyages, and Dice.com.

The opportunities for graduates of IS programs are not restricted to software industry. In fact, most of our students accept positions in many different business sectors such as energy companies, financial services industry, retailers, airlines, hospitals, and consulting groups. They work closely with various functional areas such as marketing, supply chain, manufacturing, and accounting on exciting projects in team-based, project-oriented environments.
